Farm Scrap FAQ

Is an old, non-running tractor worth more sold for parts or as straight scrap metal?

Short answer: For a genuinely old or heavily worn tractor, individual working parts — starter motors, alternators, hydraulic components, tyres in decent condition — can sometimes fetch more collectively than scrap weight alone, but this depends heavily on the make, model, and how much time you're willing to invest in dismantling and finding parts buyers versus a single quick scrap sale.

When parts genuinely add value

Common, still-in-demand tractor models often have a market for individual components, especially electrical and hydraulic parts that are expensive to replace new — if your tractor is a popular model in reasonable mechanical condition, parting it out can net more than scrap weight, but it takes time, storage, and effort to actually sell those parts.

When scrap weight is the more practical choice

For older, less common models, or a tractor in genuinely poor condition, the time and effort of parting it out often isn’t worth it compared to simply selling it whole for scrap weight — a quick, straightforward sale has real value too, even if the theoretical parts value is technically higher.

A middle-ground option

If there are a few obviously valuable components — a good starter motor, intact hydraulic cylinders — pulling just those before scrapping the rest can be a reasonable compromise between full parting out and a straight scrap sale.
